Real Zaragoza were born on 18 March 1932, formed by the merger of Iberia SC and Zaragoza CD, two clubs whose roots stretched back to the early 1900s when football first arrived in this proud Aragonese city. Under Víctor Fernández, the 1995 Cup Winners' Cup final against Arsenal at the Parc des Princes ended with Nayim's stunning 50-yard lob over David Seaman in the dying seconds of extra time – a goal forever etched into European folklore. Copa del Rey wins came in 1994, 2001 and 2004, with the latter delivered by a thrilling victory over Real Madrid. The club also boasts intense rivalries with neighbours Osasuna in the Derbi del Ebro and clashes with Athletic Club. Recent years have proved harder, with relegation in 2013 sending Los Maños into the second tier, where they have battled passionately to restore La Romareda to its rightful La Liga status.

Marcelino Martínez Cao, scorer of the winning goal in the 1964 Fairs Cup final, remains immortal in club folklore, while his fellow magnificent forward Juan Manuel Villa terrorised defences across Spain. The 1990s brought a golden generation that captured imaginations far beyond Aragon. Brazilian wizard Cafú, Argentine playmaker Juan Esnáider, and the unforgettable Mohammed Ali Amar 'Nayim' – a former Tottenham man whose 50-yard lob against Arsenal made him a Zaragoza immortal forever. Gus Poyet, Santiago Aragón, and goalkeeper Andoni Cedrún were heroes of that European-conquering era. The club has also been a launchpad for global stars: Gaizka Mendieta played some of his finest football in the white shirt, while Pablo Aimar and Roberto Ayala arrived during a glittering early-2000s spell. David Villa announced his talent here before becoming a national icon, and Diego Milito's prolific scoring helped lift the 2004 Copa del Rey. Ander Herrera emerged from La Romareda before earning his move to Manchester United. On the touchline, Víctor Fernández's tactical mastery delivered European glory, while Luis Costa, Roberto Manrique, and more recently Juan Ignacio Martínez have all attempted to navigate the club through challenging times.
