Born in Stepney, East London, in 1980, Ashley Cole came through the Arsenal academy and made his senior debut as a teenager in 1999, briefly loaned out to Crystal Palace before establishing himself as the Gunners' first-choice left-back the following season. After Chelsea he had spells at Roma, LA Galaxy and Derby County before retiring in 2019. Rivals shaped him too – Cristiano Ronaldo became a lifelong measuring stick, with their duels a Premier League fixture, while Lionel Messi tested him in unforgettable Champions League nights, including the heroic 2012 semi-final against Barcelona. For England he served under Sven-Göran Eriksson, Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson, lining up next to Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand and David Beckham in golden-generation squads.

Ashley Cole wore some of the most iconic shirts of the Premier League era. The Arsenal redcurrant 2005-06 home shirt, marking the final season at Highbury, is among the most coveted retro Ashley Cole shirt designs of all – a deep, claret-tinged tribute to the club's origins.
